Ubuntu Installation

Asked by Stan

I installed Ubuntu using Wubi on my Windows XP machine. When I select the Ubuntu boot option it brings me to the Linux prompt. What do I need to do to run or install the Ubuntu desktop and the basic suite of programs?

Hi,

Do you have any error message indicating a failure of the graphic mode (X server)? All basic programs are supposed to be included by default.

I don't have a lot of positive feedback about Wubi. Perhaps you want to try to install Ubuntu directly from the CD? Boot on the CD and choose the "live session"; if everything works (sound, graphics, Internet) then you can install it normally.

Hope this helps!

There are no error messages. When Ubuntu is selected as the boot option, it just comes up to the Linux prompt with no error messages. There is a short list of options, including halt and shutdown. By pressing escape, I receive a list of permitted commands, but nothing that appears to start the X server.

What does the LInux prompt say?

It says grub>. At the top of the screen it says GRUB4DOS 0.4.4 1008-10-27. It would appear that a dos based interface has been installed and not the graphical interface. I did not knowingly choose this option when I ran the WUBI installer.

Download the Ubuntu software. Burn a disc and install Ubuntu from this disc. And you will be able to choose between Windows and Ubuntu if you start up the system.

Hope it helps.

There seems to be a lot of complexity in this approach. The WUBI approach seemed to automate all of the steps of the process. Is there a way to add the X server mode to the grub> interface?

I suggest you to install Ubuntu NOT using Wubi.

If you have installed Ubuntu via Wubi please uninstall it read http://wubi-installer.org/faq.php

Installing Ubuntu using Wubi make Ubuntu less robust and all problems that you will have to Windows can be affect your Ubuntu partition file.

I strongly suggest you to install Ubuntu+Windows in dual mode creating a real Ubuntu ext3 partition.
In this mode you can use Ubuntu and Windows ad usual and then using installed Ubuntu you can save or repair damaged (due viruses or other issue) Windows partitions data.

- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall (pretty the same for Ubuntu 8.10)

If you download and make a Ubuntu standard 32 bits live Ubuntu cd you can test your hardware (by running Ubuntu entirely from cd) without touch nothing of your installed Windows...

Then you can still using this Ubuntu live cd to install it in dual boot mode... Ubuntu + Windows on the same pc...

Please ask new question if you are in trouble or for more info...

Thank you

OK. I've removed the WUBI installation, downloaded Ubuntu and created and checked the CD. After starting up Ubuntu I then selected the Installation icon, and answered a few questions. It then appeared to want to use my entire Hard Drive, and did not appear to provide an option to save the Windows XP partition. Am I missing something, or is there a special step to keep the Windows XP partition and just shrink it so that there is room for Ubuntu?

It did that for me, too. Try hitting the back button and then next. It
also has the option to customize. When I put Ubuntu in it corrupted
Windows twice so be sure that you are well backed up. I finally decided
that I didn't need windows at all
