video corrupt/can't login

Asked by WishingMaster

ok let me describe my steps that led to this issue. i downloaded a software called Simple CompmizConfig Settings Manager. As i was trying diffrent options i clicked on Area Zoom that was under Accessibility Tab in Default Profile. The moment i clicked on the checkbox the screen went black/distorted and i was on a blank-black screen or i was on login screen. So now i am trying to login and after typing the password the screen goes to a distorted screen and comes back to login screen. Right now i am logged in as ROOT(how, i don't even remember as i have tried various steps and i tend to forget them as i am in gr8 stress). I request all the "Masters of Linux" to come forward and rescue me.

Hello,

I suppose you are still able to log in to the commandline. Try running the following command

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

and do a reboot. This will reset your Video Mode Settings and I hope it solves the problem.

Good Luck

ok i did what i said earlier i.e. i deleted the user account and created a new user and the issue is fixed however the new user doesn't have the usual items in the menu, well as long as i can login i think this can be taken care later.

I just experienced the same problem with "zoom" feature from compiz and ended up with the same login problem.
I also tried running tobias' code from above and it did not work.
How were you able to create a new user login and at what point. I can't get anywhere past the my login screen.
Help! Somebody.
