plasma workspace crashed KDE 4,1

Asked by DizMan

Hi there.

Hope you can help me. I've haven't been able to use my Kubuntu 8,1 the past two months. Every time i log in a window pops up sayin "The application Plasma Workspace crashed. Signal 11 (SIGSEGV)". It says to report the error to the e-mail adress in the window. But no other app. is running and the wifi isn't connected at this time.

I don't know what to do - and i'm still a newbee at Kubuntu, so please be very specific in your answers as to how to solve my problem. I enclose the error report.

System: HP DV9780eo notebook, 3 GB RAM, 2 x 250 GB HD, Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS (? ram), dual booting Win Vista home premium SP1 DK and Kubuntu 8,10 - with every recomended update until end november 2008.

Please tell me, if you think I should send this error report somewhere else - and where...

Thanks...

Hello,

It sounds like it may be this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase-kde4/+bug/202832

You should try deleting the plasma-appletsrc file to see if it stops crashing. Boot-up as normal and when plasma crashes change to a terminal by pressing CTRL-ALT-F2. You should now see a terminal login, so enter your username and password. Once your in, delete the file by typing:

rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc

After deleting that file you can reboot by entering sudo reboot. I hope this helps.

Ty Octavio.

I think this soveld my problem. Now Kubuntu KDE 4,1 starts and I'm able to work and get updates etc. Some settings are lost though - but i'm grateful that i'm now able to use my system again. Thanks again :-)
