Nvidia Geforce 8400m G, restricted drivers -> failsafe graphics mode

Asked by Teacher Lion

Dear all,

This is the first time I have used this service. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

I made sure that the summary title is very similar to an earlier thread (only the Geforce series has changed). The problem is slightly different...

I have followed many how-to's on the internet for getting the Nvidia Geforce 8400m G in my ASUS A8Dseries laptop to make friends with Ubuntu 64 bit 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. All to no avail. I am hoping that I have successfully covered my tracks and done no permanent damage.

On my travels, I found that the nvidia-glx-173 driver is (apparently) the only one that lists my GPU as supported. I installed it and Ubuntu responded after restarting. It did so by flashing the nvidia splash screen a few times and then going into recovery mode. In recovery mode, the top part of my display is cut off (showing only some incoherent lines of colour), part of the left area of the GUI shows up on the right side of the screen and the rest shows up on the left. Sorry, it's hard to explain and it's very irritating.

Perhaps more usefully, I saved the log info (3 files: :0.log, xorg.0.log, and xorg.conf). Here they are...

Hi,

Please try the procedure from forumuser Unix_Slayer here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=819043

You can download the newest 64-bit Linux drivers here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_180.22.html

Ahhh, i often find the 32bit versions of OS's run better because they've been more thoroughly tested by users on a greater variety of machine. My 32bit Ubuntu uses both cores roughly equally or about 60%:40%. Ubuntu rarely needs anything like 2Gb of Ram let alone more than that. As far as i can tell those are supposed to be the 2 main advantages of 64bit over 32bit so i stick with 32bit which "just works" better.

Good luck with this

Hello,

I'm afraid that the copious info you supplied was a little to copious for me to understand 8=/.

It took me several days to get full native NVidia operation on my new HP laptop, from that experience here are some suggestions:

First, one of the things that caused me trouble was that somehow I wound up w/ two different installs of Intrepid (server and generic). Installing system stuff in one will mess up the other!

It says somewhere in the documentation that you must download the driver from NVidia and go through a number of steps to get it working. Not so, see below.

I use aptitude for nearly all my package management. It is not quite as convenient to use as the Synoptics pkg mngr, but works for me overall better than anything else.

I actually went through all the steps I mentioned only to find that what I had installed was just the same as what is available as a deb.

I could give you a lot of tests to do, but what I am about to suggest is the best I know of at present.

In aptitude, search for _all_ NVidia packages and purge them, then reboot. You should now be in "failsafe" mode. Not the best resolution and excruciatingly slow. If X fails to restart or is otherwise unusuable, log into the console as root, go to /etc/X11/ and copy xorg.conf.failsafe to xorg.conf. Now X should work. Or you could just do the next step from the console w/o X.

Once back in aptitude, again search for nvidia and select the "restricted" pkg w/ the highest number, I think *-177*. Select this one (it should also have the latest date). This will install the same driver(s) you would get direct from NVidia _and_ do the necessary configuration. Before you do the actual install, double check to make sure no other NVidia video pkges are installed, then do the actual install.

Reboot again and now X should be working in full native mode. Fast and w/ very good resolution.

If all the above fails, some detective work is in order.

Hope this helps.

Buz :)

All of the info above helped massively! I'm sorry for not replying sooner but Bangkok (in general) is really crap when it comes to internet connections.

The slayer fix helped... but there was a problem. Every time I stopped the gdm, EVERYTHING stopped (i.e.: blank screen and a small blinking rectangle).

This is what fixed it:

sudo apt-get install rcconf
sudo rcconf (I then unchecked gdm and restarted)

This way I was able to stop gdm and spend some quality time with the NVIDIA driver installation file.

Thank you very much for all of your help. You are truly awesome human beings.

Problem solved. You may also be pleased to know that I have pimped up my desktop and I now have a quasi naked anime warrioress kneeling on my AWN applet. She's got a great big sword and a nice bum. Everything is glowing and funky and cool. You are the ones that made this possible! Thank you!

Hey

You're welcome. Welcome to Ubuntu :0

Errr, i don't deserve the credit for that one tho. Please change it to the first one who answered, Mark deserves the Karma points for this. Don't worry if it's too tricky. I'm happy with the points :)

Sorry, I'm confused. What have I done wrong and how do I fix it?

You haven't done anything wrong but it'd be nice to fix giving Mark the "Solved by" credit. Don't worry tho i'm sure it'll work itself out in the long run anyway.

Welcome in and chill :)

Damn and blast it all! The page didn't actually load up properly because of
this crap connection I work on. I just saw what I thought was the right
button, pressed it, and called it a day.

I'll see if I can change it now (connection is mediocre at present)!

Many apologies. Nevertheless, rather chilled indeed - thank you!

Kind regards,

Adam (that crazy bastard that just clicks everything and then sits back to
see what happens)

I've checked it out. I can't change it. And I can't find a way of getting through to Mark either. Mark, if you're still out there...:

Dear Mark,

Sorry about this. I appear to have misallocated the only reward I was capable of offering to you for the help you provided for me. If you fancy coming to Bangkok, you can contact me via this page and when you arrive I will supply you with beer in a university bar (equivalent) filled with charming ladies of all ages. You won't even need to speak Thai. They speak perfect English.

I imagine it likely that you will not take me up on this offer. Nevertheless, today is Special Friday (pay day) and I shall be going out to get trolleyed. I hereby promise that we shall drink to Mark's health, to the health of his family, and to forge a new dream; a dream in which Mark will come to thwart his demons, to know his daemons, to live out his final years as a beacon of wisdom, and that he one day comes to die a Good Death.

Bless you, Mark. And thank you for helping me with my computer. It looks really cool now.

Kind regards,

Adam

Hi,

Thanks for that, Teacher Lion, apologies accepted :-)

You are a very funny guy. If I ever go to Thailand, I know who to contact, straight up.

Regards,

Mark

P.S. Are you a professional writer or something? Maybe you write the inauguration stuff for Obama, too? Hehe.
