Video and sound problems

Asked by David

I am unable to open And play properly any music or video files. I have tried Rhythmbox, Movie Player and Kmid etc. All volume controls are on max – no sound at all. When playing videos, the screen is blank until the last split second – when the last frame seems to flash on and then off.

I have run “Test” on System > Sound Preferences > Devices – all OK.

Please help – or send instructions to remove Ubuntu altogether and resort to Vista permanently. I have had so many problems and wasted a great deal of time trying to resolve them

I should mention that I have a brand new Asus laptop.

Thanks.

David.

Did you install Ubuntu within Vista? I'm guessing that you spent many years learning Windows ways and expected to fully understand Linux in a few days.

Sadly that kind of install is like building a house on shifting sands. If you did the Wubi (within Windows) install then just follow the usual method for un-installing Vista programs. A much better way to install Ubuntu is to follow the instructions ...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Personalty i wish this Wubi installer was removed as Windows is too flaky and when things go wrong with Windows the Ubuntu reputation is damaged. Xp was ok but since then its been steep downhill tumble and Windows7 looks even worse.

The problems you describe would have been easy to fix if you had clicked on the help menu (although that's so rubbish with most Windows programs that i can understand why you wouldn't try the options in there). Also the 32bit versions of OS's still seem much better in actual use than the 64bit versions.

A good web-page for sound issues is ;-
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/TroubleShooting

And for the video i'd guess that Asus has an ATI graphics card? So going up to the top menu;-
Applications - Accessories - Terminal
gives a command/terminal window/console - type in
gstreamer-properties
notice that pressing Tab key has an auto-complete 'predictive text' function and double clicking Tab shows the different possibilities.
Anyway, in the pop-up box click on Video and change the top line "Output" to the option that says "...(no Xv)"
Usually takes about 2minutes for people that are new to linux but bothered to ask.

Good luck and enjoy the security risks in Vista,
hopefully when Windows7 comes out you'll still be able to get support.

Tom :)

Ritesh

I'm sorry i haven't got an answer for you there. I usually find it's better to disable the Autorun function for drives like cd/dvd players. Then i use the Places menu on the top taskbar to run the Cd when i want to rather than when the machine decides too. Sorry :(

Please ask as a separate question using the link at the bottom of a question page.

Your last comments make me a bit nervous, however, about future performance and problems!

I am still a bit confused re installing Ubuntu inside vista. I simply used F2 to select boot from disc and chose to install. Is it possible to uninstall Ubuntu and start over?

Blimey, thanks. Sorry i was rude earlier.

Probably the best bet is to leave sorting out un-installing your current Ubuntu until after setting up a proper dual-boot. Ideally you need about 6Gb free so that you can comfortably give Ubuntu 5Gb, a 1Gb gap is hopefully enough space to allow you to keep using Vista comfortably and download stuff as normal
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Having gone through that process you'll have a much better idea of what happened last time and then we can work out exactly how to approach un-installing it.

PS Hardware manufacturers still prefer to use a handful of testers to try their hardware and drivers on a few machines with most of them being virtual machines rather than being tested by thousands of machines world-wide by a huge range of users and equipment. They also prefer to guess at what users want rather than listen to us all. It's the Microsoft way and exactly the opposite of what Open Source is about.

With Open Source there's usually a version labelled "beta" which you are welcome to try out but is considered 'unstable', such as Jaunty 9.04. Then there is a stable version that most user are enjoying, such as Intrepid 8.10 and Hardy 8.04 and then a whole bunch of ancient history that people like so much they refuse to give up on and upgrade so it gets talked about endlessly. Quite often something is considered unstable even tho it's actually rock-solid but is thought to have been insufficiently tested.
