I need to clear (free up) disc space on my computer.

I am a new Linux user, and I have no idea how to do anything at all. I am using Ubuntu. For those of you that are "techies," you need to treat me as if I were a drooling mongoloid, because, when it comes to Linux, I am.

I need to know how to free up disc space on my hard drive. With Windows, it was pretty simple. Start Menu, etc... With Linux...

Help.

try applications - disk usage analyzer. hopefully that might be useful. i am presuming you've been using the system for awhile and have just been dumping files all over your home directory :P

You can always try getting rid of unneeded packages via "sudo apt-get autoclean" command in a terminal screen.

 I'm trying to use the above code, but I keep getting THIS message:

 E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
 E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another program using it?

 Any idea what that might be? 'cause, dude, I'm just now starting to scratch the surface of this Linux thing, and I really want to stick with it... but man, when it gets a virus, it seems to get it BAD.

You have another application which is locking a necessary file. This is most probably the Synaptic Package Manager. Just close it and keep going.
