cannot install ndiswrapper asks for ubuntu CD

Asked by WacoJohn

I am trying to get UBUNTU 8.10 64-bit to see my WIFI card.
Dell Inspiron 1501, XP Home SP3
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
Release Date: 3/21/2007
Version: v4.60, A02

Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN MiniCard
Release Date: 3/23/2007
Version: 4.100.15.5 / 4.100.15.8, A14

>>1. Obtain the Windows Driver for your system and locate the file that ends with .inf.

Uh, have no idea what .inf file it is talking about. I will figure that out later.

But here is the REAL problem:

2. Install ndisgtk (System ? Administration ? Synaptic Package Manager).

I go to package manager, queue ndisgtk (graphical frontend for ndiswrapper (installation of Windows WiFi drivers)) which automatically queues ndiswrapper-common (Common scripts required to use the utilities for ndiswrapper) and ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 (Userspace utilities for the ndiswrapper Linux kernel module).

NOTICE, NON OF THEM ACTUALLY SAY ndiswrapper. NDISWRAPPER is not listed as a standalone item.

THEN, I click APPLY and get a confirmation 3 items will download (ndisgtk, ndiswrapper-common, ndiswrapper-utils-1.9)

APPLY AGAIN and get:

Please insert the disk labeled: Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release amd64 (20081029.2) in drive /cdrom/

and I put in the iso disk I burned from the ISO I downloaded from UBUNTU. Click OK and it tells me to insert it again, over and over. Hit Cancel, get window:

An error occurred: W: Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release amd64 (20081029.2)]/pool/main/n/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper-common_1.52-1ubuntu1_all.deb

 then another window

"Unable to mount Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

(except when I rebooted, I NO LONGER get the above window,.. still get everything else.)

The CD mounts ... I can see the contents with Places CD icon. DEB files are on the CD in the correct paths/folders.

Thing is, .. the LABEL is not what it says it is looking for. PROPERTIES says the name of the CD (label) is Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 and the package says insert disk labeled: Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release amd64 (20081029.2). The labels don't match. I don't know if that is the problem or not.

Anyone suggest why it will not read from my CD? thank you.

aha...

First open up your sources.list file

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

make this line

deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release amd64 (20081029.2)]/ intrepid main restricted

look like this

# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release amd64 (20081029.2)]/ intrepid main restricted

(means commenting out)

and save the file.

Now open up a terminal

and give

sudo apt-get update

and then try to install ndiswrapper again

Regards
