Screen goes blank while installing Ubuntu Server 6.06/6.10 on Power Mac G4

Asked by Arvinder Singh Kang

Hi

This is my first call for support.

Trying to change a Power Mac G4 (CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.0)) from OS X server to Ubuntu server.

I tried installing with both from Ubuntu Server 6.06 and 6.10 for ppc, however the screen turns blank white after showing

Loading ramdisk

I have tried using option "install video=ofonly", but same thing happens.

Can someone suggest an answer. I was excited to bring the first Linux server in this Mac only media room, but I'm getting frustrated. I have searched google for the solutions, I have seen people reporting the bug, however no perfect answer.

Regards

Thanks for your question.

You might want to give ubuntu 7.04 a try: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/feisty/release/ubuntu-7.04-server-powerpc.iso

Maybe it solves your problem.

Thanks for your answer Markus.

I just downloaded 7.04 and installation is working fine.

However my only concern at this point is, as this is going to a server, what happens in another year as UBuntu is officially not being supported after 6.06.

Will I still be able to use updates using apt-get? Will all the softwares for Ubuntu run on unsupported releases? Will security patches for for intel architecture result in release for patches on powerpc too?

I have been using Ubuntu for an year on my laptop and pretty comfortable with it.

I wish Ubuntu reconsiders PPC support atleast for another year or two.

Ubuntu dropped the official support for ppc. That means: the Ubuntu PowerPC Team (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-powerpc) is responsible for every new version.

So, there's no guarantee for new versions, but I'm quite convinced they will do a great job. As you can see on 7.04, they fixed the problems with the old versions quite successfully.

So, if you need commercial support, you'll try another distribution. If not, Ubuntu for PPC seems a quite fair solution in my opinion.

So, it's up to your opinion which distribution you trust most :-)
