Ubuntu 8.10/Vi$ta ... mother of all error messages... need help!

Asked by Dave Haring

Sheesh! After 22 years with Bill I am running Ubuntu and have never been happier... A web site I need for work is causing me to have to go back to Vi$ta. I have dreaded this day...

Anyway, my data is backed up and my plan was to reinstall Bill's ware and Ubuntu both. When trying now to reinstall Bill's ... as the files are loading it suddenly stops ... and in giant (and I mean giant) red letters taking up the majority of my 17" screen it says "ERROR" ... and in small print it says "cannot set temp path to work in". Anybody know what this is? I'm going nuts!!! Thanks. Dave

I could not find much information regarding you problem, but seems to be disk related according to this:

There are many reports similar to yours, but none has any useful information.

I recommend you do a memory and disk test. For the memory test you can use memtest from the Ubuntu install disc, for the hard drive download a diagnostics software from the hard drive manufacturer (it is usually in a bootable .iso format).

Thank you!

I got it. It was something with the partition. I used gparted and, I think, made 1 partition instead of multiple. Bill's ware is now in... Thanks for your time. Regards, Dave
