Cant play some games

I have asked this question a few times and have not got a solution yet. Every time I try to start up 'Open Arena' or similar games I get the 'signal out of range' message and the screen goes blank.
People have suggested things like reconfigure the xserver and it hasn't worked and various other things I think my computer is fast enough to run it.
Any ideas?

First you should diagnose your graphic cards drivers. Paste the outputs of these two commands:

It seems your graphics card drivers are set up correctly and you have direct rendering. The error you get is about the resolution differences. Open Arena starts with a resolution that your monitor can't adjust. You should change this setting in .openarena directory in your user home.
The file is:
.openarena/baseoa/q3config.cfg

.openarena is a hidden directory so you should choose "show hidden files" in nautilus. Then open q3config.cfg with gedit. You should find lines like these:

seta r_customheight "1024"
seta r_customwidth "1600"
seta r_mode "3"

Adjust 1024 and 1600 like resolutions to your need. I think you should make them 1024x768 at first to try and launch OpenArena. After you change the file, save and close, the launch OpenArena again.

Nautilus is the file browser. Open your user directory (home/your_username) and show hidden files. Then find the file and change it the way I explained.

Do you have desktop effects enabled?

Sometimes it causes a black screen on several games. try to turn off it.

Hello, maybe you need to limit the refresh rate for all application ...

For example, open arena start with 1024 x 768 with 85hz refresh rate, which your monitor don't support it ...
