Yowsup-cli: is it necessary the phone I use has Whatsapp?

Hello Techies,
my phone is old and isn't provided with Whatsapp. Neither is it possible to install to it.
So I thought I could install this app and use it.
I was told the phone has to have Whatapp, to me this to sounds silly.
What is your opinion?

Hello Andrew, I don't understand your question.
Yowsup-cli is an app I found in Lubuntu Software Center...
I just want to know if I can install it to my system and, as I was told a Whatsapp provided phone is needed (to me a silly thing), I ask the community its opinion.
Did I make some mistake?

yowsup-cli is a command line program, based in python-yowsup library, that allows one to login and use the WhatsApp service, providing all capabilities of an official WhatsApp client, as encryption of messages.
