Does it exist a good php (or other) written VCS?

I have a web server (from a hosting provider) which can interpret PHP, so i search for a tool written in PHP (I think I can intrepret Ruby too) that can version my code. I remember you that I can't installed packages only use FTP.
I know there are several opensource hosting VCS solution but I search for hosting mine.

Precisely I don't know for the moment. If it is possible I will have no trouble but in the other case I don't if there exist another way?
I saw http://sourceforge.net/projects/asvcs/ but I don't success to work it :( When I try to upload directories it tells me that the string is not well formatted.
Otherwise I have no solutions.
