18.04 - usb drive fails to mount after Restart - mounts every time from cold boot

Since my upgrade to 18.04, my WD Elements drive (a USB external drive) does not mount on a Restart boot sequence, but does mount every time I boot from power-off...

Any suggestions?

Your own experiences. Did you run updates and then get the issue? Was there a sudden power loss?

The 18.04 system is up to date. There have been no power outages that I know about... Being a WD external drive, I would guess that it has some Windows-compatible FS in place, but I don't know... OK - the "Disks" application shows it as NTFS...

If you safely remove the disk and connect it to a Windows computer you can run a full chkdsk on the file system.
NTFS is proprietary to Microsoft and only they know how it really works. The NTFS in Linux is a best effort attempt (although it is very good) so if the file system has issues it may cause problems in non-Microsoft OSes.

Once the check is done, use the safe remove feature in Windows and then connect it to your Ubuntu system. It should improve the situation if not fix it

Do you think I would be able to reformat the drive to a different FS to make it better w/ Linux?

No - it's a backup device for my Linux machine (the Linux machine is m primary machine).
