error 22

Asked by Jean-Pierre

Hi, I've been trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 for 10 days. Every time I try to start it on its own, I get the error 22 message. I installed it twice, from a CD bought in a magazine, then from a download from Ubuntu. I also downloaded the alternate CD, ask it to fix the grub problem, it came back with a " fatal error". I have also run the Super Grub disk, who completed its operation with succes, but on reboot, no succes actually, the same old message, "Grub loading, please wait...error 22". I ran the SGD once again, looked at the partitions, and found out finally that my F disk has been idientified by Grub as hd0! I have three HDs, one Ide, F, and two newer ones, Satas, C and D. Windows Xp is on Sata one, C (hd1) and I installed Ubuntu on Sata two, D (hd2). How in the world could the install program choose this little disk with nothing on it exept data to place it's boot? Is it possible to copy the boot loader in F to the MBR in C ( Windows first disk) and erase it from F so that there is no confusion in the future.? Could this operation create a risk for my Windows boot in C?

Thanks,
and best regards to all,
JP

"Manual Partitioning", about halfway through the install, should let you set where you want the "Mount Point" of "/" which shows the installer where to put the bulk of the Ubuntu you install.

Good luck and regards from
