cant install ubuntu

Asked by JoaoPinto

I am trying to install ubuntu Jaunty in a Targa Visionary XP-210 laptop using the "ubuntu-9.04-rc-alternate-i386" cd.

After I choose the language and the install ubuntu option, I have 2 error messages in the screen:

* [2.177623] IO APIC resources could be not be allocated
and
* udevd-event[373]: 'path_id /devices/virtual/block/ram3' abnormal exit

After this last message, the cd in computer fans continue making noise (as well as, I believe, the cd). However the systems seems to have halted!

I checked the cd for defects, and I found none. I have used the same cd to install ubuntu on a virtual machine without problems.

What could be the problem?

Thanks for the attention,

Joao

You can try to pass the "noapic" kernel parameter at boot, just as indicated in this guide:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

It would be a good idea to update the BIOS too, as sometimes newer BIOS version solve these issues.

Thanks for your reply. The "noapic" it did the trick.

However, after installing the base system the laptop seems to have stopped again in the phase "select and install software", namelly in "Preparing openoffice.org-common" at around 28%.

I've searched around to find similar threads, but found none...

Please try this command from a terminal:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

##it will request your login password, you wont see it when you type, but it's still recognized.

... since I am installing from a alternate CD, how can I access the terminal?

After your suggestion, I burned the regular liveCD and did the "sudo dpkg --configure -a" (no password required, since I was in the liveCD environment).

With the regular CD, and with the previous suggestion, it stopped in "Installing system - 22% - Copying files...". Everything halted, and I can't even move the mouse!

Maybe I should use 8.10 or 8.04?

I tryed installing 8.10 (also alternate cd) and it also stops in "Select and install software - 29% - Preparing openoffice.org-core"

Sorry for the misconception, thought you'd installed and upgrade.
Recall, 9.04 and 8.10 alternate CD don't work?
Ok, then try with 8.04 or a minimal installation:

Problem solved... Minimal CD 8.04 managed to finish the installation. Will try to use the minimal of 8.10, but expect no worries.

Thanks Sam and Guillermo Belli... :)
