no graphics on cold boot after upgrade to 2204LTS

Asked by tadiv

See question https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/702865 to see what I have gone through so far.

Where I am now: If I cold boot (from powered off) I get an Ubuntu branded flash page and that page vanishes after a while and there is no graphics. I can CTRL-ALT-F2 and login to a console session, but no graphics.

IF I boot into recovery mode and continue the normal boot from that menu, I get a 640 x 480 graphics screen and I can login but the functionality is greatly limited because of the screen resolution. I have no option to change the resolution and the display settings page says "Unknown Display"...

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

Tom

Was it an upgrade from a new install to the latest packages in 22.04 or did you upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 ?

It was 20.04 (which was up to date) to 22.04 online.

See the base question for my progress / lack thereof so far... For graphics I only have recovery mode. A regular boot gives me indication that it is starting Gnome Display Manager, but I only have a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the upper-left corner...

I suspect that it is worth mentioning that when I am in recovery mode (the only way I can get a GUI) when I go to display settings the settings dialog box says "Unknown Display" and when I run ubuntu-drivers devices I get no results - it seems like 22.04 is not detecting my GPU - is there some package or setting that can correct this? I have both xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and the nvidia-340 drivers installed...

Thoughts?

How relevant are these articles given that everything worked in 20.04 but failed after the upgrade to 22.04?
