High CPU when selecting files to open

Asked by Francesco Conti

Ubuntu 8.10:
I have very high CPU % (so my PC almost is unusable for a few seconds) when in some programs (firefox, evolution, gedit,...) I use the Open File selection (or Insert Attachment, or File Upload). That's happening from last one/two weeks, never seen it before.

Someone out there had the same problem?

Thanks in advance
Francesco

firefox uses a lot of resources it can be a hard core memory and cpu hog. you might have a python script running that is eating up your cpu ut happens quite often. try running top command in the terminal and see what is at the top of the list then you can kill it by typing kill (pid# without the quotes) the pid is the number next to the process ie: kill 21065

also if this is happen with a specific folder it may be that the folder is corrupted and the files are fine this happend to me to get around this make a new folder and move the files using terminal

mv -r /home/user/folder/* /home/user/newfolder

it works sometimes lemme know if it works

Can you help with this problem?
