In the update application is a button labeled "check". Please click that
one first before clicking "update".

Odd, did clicking on 'check' cause it to download things?

Can you please try the following in a terminal (applications ->
accessories -> terminal)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

And if that also complains, please give me the output.
