64-bit version of Ubuntu?

I am a newbie to Linux. I want to install 9.04 on my HP ZV6131 laptop. It has 1 g memory and ATI Radeon Express 200m graphics. The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 (3200+), but it is of the x86 Family. My machine is currently running 32-bit Win XP. So, even though I have a 64 bit processor, my machine runs a 32 bit OS.

Which version of Ubuntu 9.04 should I use? 64 or 32?

i'd go with 32 if ur currently running a 32....they usually dont interchange with each other...have you ever tried running a 64 bit os? i had a amd 64 before...and guese what....i got cheaped....it wasnt a true 64......but i would honestly go with a 32 being you already know it works.....or you can wait for another post and see what someone else comes up with....good luck

I suggest going with the 64bit. I used to have one of those chips too and it worked great with a 64bit OS.

Overshard-Did 64 bit limit the availability of applications you could run?

@hick2297 - 32 bit Windows has nothing to do with a 64 Linux install. They are kept separate and don't have to interchange.

There is not a huge reason not to use 64. It can sometimes complicate some things, but most of the issues are ironed out. How much ram do you have? This is really one of the best gauges if it is even worth it to use 64 bit. If you only have 1 gb for example, I would stick with 32 just because you know everything works. If you use 64 everything should work, but there is a slight chance something is quirky.

That said, almost every 32 bit app is also available for the amd64 architecture.
