Is your microphone working with other applications? If not, please, check your sound properties panel to make sure your microphone is active (i.e.: the red mark under your mic is not set and mic volume is not zero)

I am not able to record or use it with skype so i can talk to my husband in iraq. when I try to record and then play what I was recording it comes out really fuzzy and no words at all. I have checked everything that I know how to do going into the terminal and also into the volume settings and I still cant get it to work

Ok. Please, open System->Preferences->sound and check whether your sound card is detected and the sound server of your system. (something like "Capture:blahblah(PulseAudio)")
