whats overwriting a file

Asked by Roger Warburton

Had to Upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to ubuntu 8.10 due to sound problems,computer is crashing and going off,message is being received when switched off.
xserver-xorg post inst warning overwriting possibly-customised configuration files backup in /etc/xll/vorg.conf.20090614172209.

Can you help

The warning itself is no big deal. There must be another problem here. Try the following: If the PC crashes press ctrl+alt+F1 at once. If that gets you a terminal, log in. If not you're in trouble. (-; After you logged in type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". It asks you a bunch of questions. If your not sure what to answer just take the default. When your done type "sudo gdm restart". If it still dosen´t work press ctrl+alt+f1 again and than ctrl+c. After that type " cat /var/log/Xorg.* | grep EE" and post the output here. If there is no output type "dmesg" and also post the last 20 lines (or so) of its output here.

keeps crashing,and rebooting its self,tried your idea of ctrl+alt+F1,left a
blank screen
Left myself in some problems mainly to reset the log in name etc.
The computer told me that the OEM installer failed and I should report a
bug.!!!!!!

When starting the computer this morning it did a routine check of the drives and posted a fail message
error"vm.mmap_min_addr"is a unknown key{fail}

updated to ubuntu9.04 this solved the problem
