KDE vs GNOME

Asked by Rob Frerejean

Hi,

What is a better desktop to use? KDE or GNOME? I use GNOME now for a long time, but never seen KDE. Are all the applications similar to GNOME?

And without reinstalling my system, is it possible to install KDE next to my GNOME? If yes, how.

Thankx

Hello Rob,

There is has been debate about which desktop environment is better since they appeared, but in the end is a matter of personal preference.

You will find similar applications in KDE as those found in Gnome, but you can also use Gnome application in KDE and vice-versa.

You can have KDE and Gnome installed on the same computer, and you select which session you want to start at (graphical) login. To install KDE, you just type this:

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

I personally prefer KDE because I find it to be more customizable, applications are richer and more functional. Gnome is too much simplistic for my taste.

BTW, since you will be testing KDE, I recommed you try the latest KDE 4.3 release. It's still in RC state, but it has many improvements. You can find more details about adding the repositories here:

Wow, that looks much better then GNOME. Have to get used to it though. Can do much more for some reason. I always run on Powersafe mode, and I always have to change that after reboot. Now I don´t have to do that any more. Great PLUS for KDE.

But for some reason my GNOME is not working right anymore. Need to find out what it is and what´s not working.

Is there an other option to get KDE then giving the command install kubuntu? Like install KDE.?

Thanks for so far. I´ll keep this question open for a while for discussion.

Rob,

I can't say for sure, as Gnome is not just one package, it is composed of many programs and libraries, but here's a clue:
