https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus/Avg

When it says that it can't remove viruses this is the same for most antivirus programs. There is one antivirus that is meant to be able to extract a virus from files leaving them uninfected!! Most antiviruses identify the infected file and then help you quarantine the file - then you just need to get a duplicate (but uninfected) version of the file to replace it. Usually that's quite easy in linux, just "fix broken packages" or try reinstalling something that needs the file as a dependency. Of course this is theoretical because i don't know of anyone that has really found a virus in linux.

Hopefully one of the above links will help but only if you have installed the proper Ubuntu version of Avg. If you are trying to run the Windows version through Wine then you will probably be stuck
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows
because Windows programs aren't meant to run in linux, nor do Windows viruses fare well in linux so you can say fare well to virus problems now :)

Hi :)

Sorry about that. Try right-click on "Applications", instead of left click, and then try "Edit Menus". Hopefully you'll find Avg in there somewhere and just ticking it should bring it back to the menus :)

Good luck and regards from

Hmmm, that's odd. Can you go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

and then use either serach tool to hunt for Avg? Does it have a green splodge beside it? Perhaps try reinstalling it from there anyway?

Good luck with this

Perhaps it might be better to install and use "clamav" instead? I prefer it, it's the one i use. Avg have become too large and corporate i think - which is exactly not something you want from an anti-virus. Clamscan is easy to use from the command line but it might be worth getting their gui front-end too "clamtk"

Good luck and regards from

PS have you ever had a virus in Ubuntu?

Nope. I've never had a virus or other malware in any other linux either but i've only been using linux for about a year or perhaps less. The main purpose of antivirus in linux is for scanning Windows drives/partitions.

Synaptic is better in some ways but really "Add/Remove Applications" uses the same databases and locations and all that but it just presents the information differently and has less tools in it's menu's. If you used either "Synaptic" or "Add/Remove" then you did the right thing but sometimes Synaptic can point out something that might have gone a little wrong or it can add tiny extra libraries or other things for extra functionality. "Add/Remove" seems good for 'broad brush strokes' where "synaptic" deals with micro managing 'petty' detail. Each have their advantages and can be used interchangeably to help install and fix problems ;) They both use the same command-line tool to do the real work ;)

I used Avg in Windows but moved to "Clam" in linux. With anti-virus you just don't want to get too dependant on using the most popular ones because they are the ones the virus writers will focus on working around, or even totally compromising. On the other hand you also don't want to use some random thing off the internet. Sticking to what's in the repositories (ie "add/remove" or "synaptic") is best for most software anyway but it's especially important for antivirus :)
