Please make sure that Synaptic Package Manager, Add/Remove Applications, or another software installation related program is not running, then try again. If that doesn't work, try restarting your computer - that should hopefully release the lock.

you can download the deb package from here : http://www.opera.com/browser/download/

its easy to install. but its not the recommended way.

Hi :)

Ok first get to a command-line
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal#Starting%20a%20Terminal
then type in

ps aux

and copy&paste the output into here. Please try using Synaptic Package Manager
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto
to find and install "Opera"

This guide might help you migrate from Windows to linux, we have some very different ways of working
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows
which is part of the reason we don't have to worry about viruses so much
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

@ Shibly Rahman

It is truth you can install Opera from synaptic if you add

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu jaunty partner

to your source list. But that way you will not get latest stable version of Opera. There is nothing wrong to download it from web site if you know that you can get deb package for Ubuntu.

I think Computer Janitor just removes the download compressed file rather than the installed package?

no, i thought like that only .if i click clean up opera is deleted from the system

Can you copy the download file into your documents folder so that if the installed version does get deleted then at least you can reinstall it?

I don't think it will. Even if it does then you can reinstall Opera through Synaptic which would be much better. The settings and configurations are saved separately so a new install of Opera would just pick up on those without trouble

...but remember to not accidentally purge/"completely remove" opera. That may remove the configurations.

Normally when you download and install a package th downloaded file will get stored in a cache after it has finished being useful. It is good to clear the cache occasionally to get rid of all those installers as they just clutter the place. The installed packages are not affected by that.

True, but Computer Janitor doesn't purge/completely-remove anyway. To purge/completely-remove you would need to use Synaptic or the command-line

Ah, thanks for that correction. I always used to think Computer Janitor also purged.

Can you help with this problem?
