How do I disable sound alerts for when my buddies sign on from Facebook?

Asked by stacey

I receive an alert each time one of my facebook buddies signs on, even if my status is offline. While the visual alert doesn't bother me the constant noise is annoying, and editing my preferences for sound hasn't work. How do I disable the sound?

What program are you using when you get the alert? Straight Facebook? Or are you using an IM with Facebook plugin e.g. Pidgin or Empathy?

Hi, thanks for the response. I am using Pidgin with a Facebook plugin. And I hope not to cut off all of my sounds, but only the alert for when people log onto Facebook. Thanks

From the main menu select Tools -> Preferences (or just press the keyboard shortcut CTRL+p).
From Preferences window select the "Sounds" tab.
And select the option you want ;-)
Hope that helps.

I tried that, but I couldn't set it so that I can keep certain sounds (like when someone sends me a message) and disable others, like when someone signs onto facebook.

At least with Pidgin 2.6.1 you can set sound for different events (enable/disable and customize the sound for any particular event)
From the main menu select Tools -> Preferences (or just press the keyboard shortcut CTRL+p).
From Preferences window select the "Sounds" tab.
Tools -> Preferences - "Sounds" tab - Sound Events (on the Sounds tab foot)

If you don't have this option maybe you should update pidgin.
Instructions to update pidgin:
-----------------------------------------
Setup the PPA, copy-and-paste these commands into a terminal:

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com \ 67265eb522bdd6b1c69e66ed7fb8bee0a1f196a8

echo deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu \ `lsb_release --short --codename` main | \
    sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pidgin-ppa.list

After doing this, open Update Manager, check for updates.

the echo command will need sudo:

sudo echo deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu \ `lsb_release --short --codename` main | \
    sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pidgin-ppa.list
