Why does my movie player keep closing and online videos will not play?

Asked by reptileguy

Hi I recently upgraded from 8.04 then to 8.10 now to Ubuntu 9.04. I have a Hewlett Packard, with a intel pentium 4 CPU with A 2.8 GHz processor.

Issue number 1 im having is it will not play online videos, and it always has a big grey play button because it will not auto play ads.

Issue number 2 is that every time I open up Movie Player or Mplayer Movie player to either play a song or video, or movie, it gets loaded then it closes the program.
.

Please Help. Thank You!

Hi :)

Please work through the Medibuntu worksheet to update all your multimedia apps to the new version of Ubuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
I would miss out the optional step but go with whichever way you prefer.

Hopefully that fixes everything?

This did not solve my issue, but thankyou for trying, online videos still will not play, and movie player continues to close. Also my sister comes to my house sometimes and she likes to go on game sites, but they will not work either.

Hi :)

I was expecting a few more people to pop in with suggestions. The next step is to install MPlayer and adobe-flashplugin. So on a command-line try

sudo apt-get install mplayer
sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

Getting games to work is a separate question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
but i would also ask at the Wine forums
http://forum.winehq.org/

I think the main thing for getting Windows games to work in Ubuntu is to install the latest Wine from their website. We have the last stable one in the normal repositories but that was version 1.0.1. Usually it's best to get the latest stable version from the Ubuntu repositories but Wine is a bit different. Their latest development release (beta test release) is 1.1.29 and well worth trying first
http://www.winehq.org/
although it might be easier to install the last stable one with the command

sudo apt-get install wine

I hope something here helps!
Good luck and regards from

Hi :)

Perhaps it might be worth trying a fresh config folder for Firefox.

First go to
Bookmarks - Organise - Export as html
and save your bookmarks somewhere safe you can reach easily. I tend to keep a folder called "techie" or "backups" in my Documents folder for this sort of thing. Close Firefox.

Then in the "Places" menu on the top taskbar click on "Home folder". Use the "View" menu to show all hidden files/folders. Scroll down until you see a ".mozilla" folder and rename that to something like ".mozilla-150909". Open firefox.

A new profile should be automatically generated. It wont have any of the Add-ons or preference settings or anything so before getting any of those just try going to the site that was causing problems.

Note that you can always go back to the "Home" folder to delete the new profile and rename the old one back. It's best if firefox is closed when you do that or else it will automatically generate another new one! Also it might be possible to poke around inside the old profile and see what you want to copy back into the new one. I would do a couple of things at a time so that if it stopped me getting back into that website then i could really pin it down to exactly what had caused the problem.

Good luck with this!

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)
