ubuntu 8.10 wifi has very low signal

wifi signal is very low in ubuntu 8.10 using rtl8187b cant connect at all,boot to xp i have a great signal works fine
older versions of ubuntu worked better than xp does now,,,,,im at a dead end i cant figure it out

The scale used in your Windows XP app is different than the scale used by Ubuntu (if you're just using the graphical bar as a reference).

Keep in mind that your signal strength will fluctuate. Also, if your antenna is sitting behind your computer, you will have weaker singals if the router in front of your computer than behind it. The metal acts as a reflector... any signals hitting the metal plate or grate will be reflected back, this will essentially double the signal strength of any device in front of your antenna, but kill any signals from devices behind it.
