Try this: System> Preferences> Display

when I cilck on display, a dialog box tells me: It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?

I click yes.
X server window would open, then go to "X Server Display Configuration"
from there you can adjust your resolution.

Are you using an NVIDIA or ATI graphics accelerator, or another? Please provide more information about your computer.

That is for Nvidia graphics accelerated, and by just upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 'Karmic Koala' the graphics driver is (Nvidia version "185")

Go to System > Administration > "NVIDIA X Server Settings" and have a look there.

Can you help with this problem?
