USB tethering iPhone to ubuntu

Asked by eworthy

It's childplay to use the iPhone as an Internet uplink in windows and on the Mac. Not only does it not work on Ubuntu an exhaustive search found no helpful information anywhere.
Some ppl. claim to have got it working with bluetooth or possibly with a jail broken iPhone but there is no meanigful info on how to do it as easily as it is with the 'other' platforms.

Hi Eric,

You're in luck, I think ;)

There is a tutorial that was prepared by one of the Ubuntu Vancouver LoCo members and demo'd at our July meeting. It seems to work, or at least it did at the meeting.

Here's the link to the instructions. http://technopragmatica.blogspot.com/2009/07/iphone-tethering-notes-for-ubuntu.html

Note that the istructions were written for Jaunty Jackalope (9.04). The bluetooth stack in Karmic Koala (9.10) is brand new and may make it a lot easier, perhaps even making those instructions worth a rewrite.

Good luck sir. Please let me know how it goes.

Cheers,
Randall

Unfortunately, this is not the solution as it applies to "Bluetooth". The machine I wish to link to does not have bluetooth. It is USB tethering that I wish to implement. I do have some hope for Koala.

Sorry Eric, I hadn't realized you wanted a USB (wired) tether.

Hoping someone else will be able to assist you through a wired USB iPhone setup this as I don't own an iPhone.

One thing you might want to consider is acquiring a Bluetooth USB dongle. They're very inexpensive and would allow a tether without much further hassle. I found a candidate here for $14.99 CDN. http://ncix.com/products/?sku=21363&vpn=CB-545&manufacture=nGear%20Technologies%20Inc.

Cheers,
Randall.

Unfortunately USB tethering requires iTunes, and this application only runs on Windows XP/Vista and Apple OSX. I could presume it MAY work with WINE but I have not tried this myself.

I'm very intrigued by the Bluetooth tethering I shall certainly try this method out.

Eric, In going through some of my computer parts, I've located a spare USB Bluetooth dongle. You're free to try it with your iPhone/computer, and if it works pay me what you think it's worth... Hope that helps.

Also hoping that someone else will chime in with additional info, should you decide to continue with wired.

I have managed to link via bluetooth. It works out of the box with Ubuntu 9.10. Its a second class solution but it works. Its not ubuntu's fault, it's Apple Inc. Lets all send Apple Inc. an email requesting itunes for linux.

Can you help with this problem?
