Shutdown problem with ubuntu 9.10

Asked by Hasnat

I was using ubuntu 9.04 in my Dell Studio (32-bit) laptop with vista. yesterday i upgraded the ubuntu to 9.10 and after that i can't shutdown my computer. it is stuck whenever I try to do shutdown and say "Buffer I/0 error on device loop 0, logical block (some random numbers)". I also tried with "sudo shutdown -h now" but no change. I am really suffering with this and it seems no way to go back as I didn't make any backup. Can anybody help me?

by the way, why its taking too much time to boot ubuntu 9.10 compared to 9.04? I don't know that much about linux but it seems weird.

I think I have the same problem.
After Ubuntu upgrade to 9.10 I/O Error at Shutdown.
Buffer I/O Error on Device Loop0
Logical Block 134 9636 Linux-BZIMAGE

Many I/O Errors then it just stops with blinking cursor.

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Windows 2000 System in a NTFS Partion I already used for Data only.
9.04 worked just fine. After upgrade to 9.10 Ubuntu would never shutdown or restart.

I suppose your problem occurs because of the unstability of 9.10 Karmic Koala. I suggest you to use another OS/version(you can download Jaunty) for a couple of weeks and wait for an update that focuses on hardware compatibility.

Have you reported a bug about this situation? This will make the process easier and faster.

About your question, according to some Ubuntu-forums, boot time has increased, but the length of the shut down process has decreased on 9.10 Karmic Koala.

Can you please confirmed the problem has been fixed with the update? I performed the update and the problem persists. I tried booting with some other kernels (2.6.28) and had no luck.

I found someone has created a bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/464700

I have had this problem with the latest Lucid and Maverick versions (10.x) so it looks like the bug hasn't been fixed. I never had this problem with version 8.04 (Hardy Heron) so am wondering what improvement 8.10 offers regarding its USB readiness? If it's still available then I hope to replace my 10.10 with that so that I have the perfect copy so far and even better with the server version as it's supported until 2013 and I'll need it for server use anyway. I am using a Dell Insipiron 9300 with Windows XP and have been trialling the Ubuntu, the above mentioned versions.

Anyhow, you developers out there need to please take notice of this. I'd expect the silly I/O errors only if I really did have problems with my hardware or, its like with Windows. You guys can do better than that to please restore the raw functionality and cut the bloat that makes us flee Windows in the first place!

Oh by the way, a manual workaround when you get the I/O errors on shutting down is this: type 'exit' where the cursor stops at the bottom left of the screen and then you should shut down OK. Just because there's no prompt there doesn't mean that it's hung: the keyboard is still operable and that's what I found from running the trial off the CD. I've not installed it on my laptop yet. I hope this has all helped.
