Ubuntu 9.10 said i have a dead Windows hardisk

Ubuntu 9.10 is fast fun to use but said a have a bad hardisk but I only have on in a dell xps gen 2 laptop. ubuntu did not give me this crap before. said you hardisk has many bad sectors.

If the system is telling you that you have a harddisk with bad sectors then it's very possibly true it has! I would run a check on the disk using System->Administration->Disk Utility. Once this is started, select the problematic drive and in the right hand panel of this tool click on the More Information link. This will open a SMART data window showing the drive status - click on the Run self-test link to do a drive test. This will use the Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) to check the state of your drive. If it reports sector errors, you may need to think about get a new drive as the drive may be near to failing.
