Cant log into ubuntu. First tme trying t use it

I have a dell XPS 400 and i decided i dont want the windows OS anymore so i went to www.ubuntu.com and downloaded ubuntu 9.10 desktop version. I burned the CD and restarted my pc so i could get rid of windows and install ubuntu. I got it all istalled and ecerything was goig just fine but then after i reset after the install i went to log in and its not letting me log in. Im not getting and acces denided message. I KNOW i hae the right password and username. Afteri type the username and hit enter it goes to a black screen for just a sec then back to the log in screen. It jut keeps goingback to this screen and its rally getting me mad. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and what an do to fix it please. Also im very new to this so i dont know much about it yet.

Did you verify the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn as slowly as you could?
Did you run the CD verifier once initially booted to?

Well, it seems that there could be some problem with the installation but you may try changing the password for the user..
restart your system and select the option to boot into recovery mode.. after that you will be prompted to select an option (choose "drop to root shell prompt"
you will see a shell prompt..
now, use this command in the temrinal
shell$- passwd <username>

replace <username> with the username you are using to log in..
and change the passord
now type reboot and follow the regular boot with changed passwd..

If you did a clean installation first time around, why not re-install again from scratch and make doubly sure you have the right username and password combination configured at install time.
