How do I get the Gnome logon screen back after installing Xubuntu

Asked by Tony Pursell

In order to test something to answer a question in Launchpad Answers I installed Xubuntu alongside Gnome. I can use the options in the Xubuntu logon screen to start a Gnome session and it will keep doing this. However, after running Gnome, it still comes up with the Xubuntu logon screen if I logout or restart. In previous versions (eg Dapper), if I chose Gnome, I would get the Gnome logon screen. How can I get the Gnome logon screen back in Karmic.

Did you mean System>admin>Login Screen? This doesn't have any useful options for login screens. Previous Ubuntu versions did.

Restore Ubuntu splashscreen after install xUbuntu

sudo update-alternatives --config usplash-artwork.so

or

sudo apt-get --reinstall install usplash

or

sudo apt-get --reinstall install usplash-theme-ubuntu

I hope this solve your question...

Hi Marco

Thanks for your suggestions.

Unfortunately, none of them change the logon screen. They only change is when I used your second option. It changed the Ubuntu icon on the black and white splash screen with a Xubuntu mouse.

Hi Marco

Your suggestions did inspire me to try removing/installing packages. This is what I did to get my Ubuntu login screen back.

In Synaptic, I marked xubuntu-gdm-themes for removal and applied it. This also removed ubuntu-desktop and xsplash.

So I marked ubuntu-desktop for installation and also ubuntu-gdm-themes and applied them. This also re-installed xsplash.

Now all I need to do is to get rid of that mouse icon, which is there for a while before the new Ubuntu splash screen starts.

I'm happy for now...
