battery backup for linux?

Asked by heather michel

I want to get a battery backup system for my linux machine as our power goes out a few times a week. What one is best/easiest to configure. Can you simply plug in and go and not install software?? Just to prevent your machine from going down abruptly?

Depends on the hard ware, usually there is a internal component for power management in the battery. you need to check the hard ware, if your just hooking up a "battery" (ie. car battery , pack of AA's) then you might want to get switch made to turn on the back up power.

short answer: you should not need software for basic functioning of the back up power.

I think she means software that will shut down the machine gracefully once the battery gets low. I haven't had any experience in that area so I'll let someone else answer.

exactly.
Now I found this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/apcupsd/
I am thinking that will do the trick with this gizmo: http://www.staples.com/APC-Back-UPS-ES-750VA-10-Outlet-Green-UPS/product_725337?cmArea=SEARCH

Thoughts?

well another kudo's for linux!!!
I bought a APC battery backup es 450/550G at staples and pluged it in, hooked up the usb etc. turned on my linux karmic machine and it auto detected the battery backup and let me configure it. No fuss, no muss, no dish-pan hands!
I LOVE LINUX!!!
I had planned to spend half the evening on it (like I am sure I would have had to in windows! lol)
