Which webcams are Ubuntu-friendly?

Asked by Joe Liau

Are there any recently reviewed webcams on the market that are working with Ubuntu/Karmic?

I have seen pages like these:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Webcam
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SkypeWebCams

Most of these don't seem to cover 9.10 and if they do, then I can't find that webcam in stores.

Are webcams still a big problem in Ubuntu or do most of them generally work?

Thanks,
Joe

From my experince they just work,

Tried several laptops with webcams and they been working "out-of-the-box" with cheese.
Both Jaunty and Karmic.

I'd suggest you get ubuntu live on a USB stick , boot on it and see if your camera works.

Thanks for the response. I guess I should have specified that I am looking for a desktop computer webcam. ie USB peripheral type device.

At the very last, choose a camera from store, google on the internet "camera name + ubuntu karmic". That's what I did for purchasing my hardware and finding a headset that worked perfect.

Two older cameras that "Just work" in 9.10 Karmic Koala are listed in this post. They are both fairly mainstream and likely available used on eBay, Craigslist, etc.

I have included the output of lsusb in case you want to double-check that you have the exact webcam before you buy it.

1. Creative Labs, Inc. "Model No. PD1170" webcam

ubuntuwillchangetheworld@karmic:~$ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 041e:401f Creative Technology, Ltd WebCam Notebook [PD1171]

and,

2. Logitech, Inc "Notebook Deluxe" webcam

ubuntuwillchangetheworld@karmic:~$ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 046d:08a9 Logitech, Inc. Notebook Deluxe
