If you go to System > Preferences > Keyboard

Does it show two keyboards layout (English) and French ? or only one (French)

when I logon, it only shows USA.

I've added French and applied by default, I deleted USA, and applied by default again.

But every time I restart my computer, System > Preferences > Keyboard only shows USA

Somebody told me that it was because of HAL autodetection, which is now used in Karmik instead of xorf.conf.

I'm a noob on Linux and Ubuntu, so I don't know what to do to force my keyboard on French.

Thanks for your help.

Strange.

I have one laptop that is configured for three languages : English, French and Vietnamese. the laptop has a US keyboard but I can switch to French keyboards and US keyboards. I have no problems whatsoever to configure and keep the selected keyboards as defaults.

If you want to have a French keyboard configuration, try to set-up the French language in Language Support and select the use of Ibus. You may wish to install the French language as well. Then you need to logout and login agin for the effects to be taken into account.

Whenever you'd opened any program requiring inputs you may click on the Ibus (keyboard with a globe) icon on the top panel and you should be able to choose French keyboard to do typing.

Hope that helps

That's ok, I've found the problem.

when I installed Ubuntu, it asked me my Country and my Timezone, but not my Keyboard, and the default is USA.

I activated the automatic logon, ignoring tha the keyboard was set to USA.

that's the reason why at every logon, the keyboard automatically switched to USA.

I disabled the automatic logon, logged manually setting the keyboard to France, and then enabled the automatic logon.

I rebooted 3 times to verify, but now my keyboard remains in French.

Thank you for trying to help me ;-)
