No Sound with ALC889 on Ubuntu 10.04 with ALSA 1.0.23

I'm running Ubuntu Lucid 10.04. I upgraded from Karmic 9.1. Initially my system was working well, but at one point in time it stopped playing sound - no sound at all. I thought an upgrade might help as it may install newer drivers etc. Unfortunately it didn't.
So i did some research on the internet and tried couple of forum posts and suggestions as well as the instructions @ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound, but without any success.

this leads me to create this post - hoping for some help or some guidance into the right direct on where to look for.

Check your volume control.
I'm new to and it happened
to me that when I upgraded
for some reason it turned
down the volume. I turn all
bars up..

alsamixer ; pavucontrol; gnome-alsamixer; gnome-volume-control

I tried also some different settings in those tools as given by the instructions. If you have any specific setting in mind which i should check, or if you are aware of another tool, please let me know.

According to the output you sent us, ALSA seems to be correctly installed (including the correct kernel version)

ALSA is detecting 2 separate sound devices on your PC:

1) RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200]

and

2) SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

Make sure that Ubuntu is sending sound output to the SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) sound device instead of the RS880 Audio Device. There should be an option in sound settings to change the ALSA output device.

If you are trying to use the analog audio jack, choose the 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB device.

But if you are trying to use digital output (HDMI), try 1 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI

Then retest sound using headphones AND speakers. Test headphones using all available audio jacks on the PC.

If that does not help, please try this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following command (copy/paste command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

In gedit, scroll down and replace the following line in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

with the following line:

options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig

Don't forget to reboot your pc after every change you make to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

Only test 1 model option at a time between each reboot!

I think i've tried this through one of the tutorials before. Nevertheless i checked it again with the one you recommended and the "3stack-6ch-dig". Maybe i need to try more, but the full list will take some time :)
Anyway i realized that even if a changed the Sound Card to SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) after a reboot sometimes it switched back to the RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200]. so i ended up in more then 1 reboot for every sound model option. i ended up by trying the same with the deactivation of the RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200] but it's still not working.
I'm trying to use a Hedphone via the front jacks. nevertheless i also checked the 6 jacks in the back a couple of times for some audio output. i also made sure to reboot a couple of times.
So i'd have 2 questions:
Do you have another idea what i could try (other then all the different sound modules)?
If not, is there another way to restart the audio module without rebooting the hole pc (would make things much faster for me :) )?

I have no other suggestions besides what I wrote previously.

Instead of rebooting, I THINK that you can run the following 2 commands between each model option change:

sudo alsa force-reload
sudo alsa-utils restart

I tried now some more sound modules which made sense to me ( the general ones, all ASUS, all Targa/MSI, macpro ).
I did this using the commands mentioned by you. without any luck.
After that i changed it back to 6stack-dig and changed the Sound Card profiles with pavucontrol forth and back ( not even sure what the profiles exactly change :( ... but it hasn't made any difference )
if there are any other option where i might be able to get sound again, please let me know. otherwise i'll keep trying your above suggestion but with rebooting.
To my understand it shouldn't make any different if i select the profile OFF for the "RS880 Audio Device [Radeon HD 4200]" to assure the other sound card is choosen - right?
