I am having the very same issue with my HP Compaq laptop. I was having the same issue with the last installment of Ubuntu as well. I tried the download patch that I found someplace (I can't remember what it was or where I found it, it was so long ago.) I had given up before but thought with 10.4 the issue may have been resolved, but it is still doing the same thing.

I was not adding a new question in the thread. It is the exact same issue, both
on HP computers. I am not an idiot. You, however, have terrible grammar.

I have an HP Pavilion dv7. When I plug in headphones the main speakers go off but the subwoofer (on the bottom of the computer) continues to play. I installed Alsa Mixer, and whenever I want to use the headphones I have to start the Alsa Mixer and move the slider for "Front" all the way down to 0. This is slightly annoying, but until there is solid support for the sound system on this laptop that is what I have to do.

Can you help with this problem?
