no sound hda-intel

Asked by paul jones

Running Ubuntu 10.10. PC is Acer Aspire T180 (desktop model) with NVIDIA integrated sound + Realtek ALC888 chipset. Only use system intermittently but although sound worked on earlier version of Ubuntu (8? with bongo drums with initial splash screen), the last two distributions have no sound at all. I've read quite a bit of stuff about fixing but am making no progress. I have output from lspci and aplay commands as well as checking that basic sound module is installed. The ALSA script output is located at

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=952d5c7bcab7ac9a72c621db92de21679c716976

Sound continues to be fine when using Windows XP

I've checked that sound is not muted, so any further help would be much appreciated.

Make sure your levels are cranked and be sure to run:

alsamixer

and crank and unmute all levels. Does this help?

There is a collection of options regarding ALC888, hope they help.

Hi

I have 10.10. too.

1: Call the Gnome Alsa Mixer. Check all the mutes and the loudness. The second bar, called Master, is important.

2: Read the following: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Hope it helps.

Please proceed with the following procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following command (copy/paste command into the Terminal and then hit <enter>)

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

In the gedit editor, scroll down to the last lines of the alsa-base.conf file and ADD these 2 lines to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file (with the file open inside the gedit editor!):

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig

Step 3: Reboot pc and retest sound via headphones and speakers.

Step 4: If sound is still not working after a reboot, replace the 3stack-dig model option with one of the options below (for example: replace model=3stack-dig with model=acer-aspire or model=auto) and then reboot and retest sound again using headphones and speakers.

Between reboots, only test ONE model option at a time! Do not mix model options.

I've resorted to trying headphones which I normally don't use. With the model type set both to '3stack-dig' and 'auto' in the .conf file I DO hear sound out through the headphones. This is using the output socket on the front of my tower PC. The speaker and microphone leads are connected at the back (there are 6 outlets provided there) and go to my TFT screen which has in-built speakers. Its these that are not working but which work fine under XP. If all else fails I can use headphones but would really like to get the normal arrangement working. Thanks for help so far.

Then you will need to continue testing the following model options one by one until you find the right model option where both headphones and speakers are working:

Do not mix model options. Only test 1 model option between each reboot.

I have no other suggestions to give....

If your TFT screen is connected to your PC via an HDMI cable (pure digital connection), then I think you should select the following audio playback device in the Sound settings panel:

card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]

instead of the following ANALOG playback device:

card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]

It is possible that your headphones work, because they are using an analog connection to your sound card, but the speakers might require a digital connection (including selecting "ALC888 digital" in the sound settings).

It is impossible for me to know how exactly you have connected the soundcard to the speakers (using which soundcard jack....), so I am just guessing here....

Mark,

Its definitely an analogue connection, confirmed by running the Realtek Audio Control Panel under XP. I have a screenshot of this showing the live connections but can't see a way of uploading that to this discussion. I've tried around half a dozen driver settings but can only get sound from the headphones. In the circumstances I think I'll leave it at that and hope a future release, or more likely upgrade of PC, will fix it in the future. Many thanks for your help.

Can you help with this problem?
