No sound in Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04.LTS I have no sound whatsoever. Not even system beeps. My sound card appears to be detected, but is not being used. I have checked alsamixer, but nothing muted. Have installed and re-installed pulseaudio, deleted .pulse from user account, aded and deleted extra users etc, all to no avail! Soundcard listed in alsamixer as "SiS SI7012".

Hi

I have 10.10.

1: Call the Gnome Alsa Mixer. Check all the mutes and the loudness. The second bar, called Master, is important.

Hi Peter, thanks for the reply. When I run gnome-alsamixer, I get the following error "Bad key or directory name: "/apps/gnome-alsamixer/display_mixers/": Key/directory may not end with a slash '/'

Also this appears in the terminal window -

By Synaptic uninstall the Alsa Mixer and install it again. Search for gnome-alsamixer.

By the way, the command "alsaconf" returns -> command not found.

First edit the following file:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

REMOVE the following line from that file and save the change:

options snd-hda-intel model=asus-mode3

Then try all suggestions here:

Thank you Mark. I appreciate the help, but none of these suggestions have worked. I still have no sound at all, except from the POST beep at restart. I had kubuntu before with no problems, then I upgraded to kubuntu 9.10 and lost sound. A fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS now and no sound at all. I think I have tried every suggestion I can find :-(
