No sound with sigmatel sound card and ALSA

Asked by Albert Spijkers

I have a Sigmatel sound card in a Dell Precission M90 that was recognized during installatin of the software, but during my getting to know Ubuntu it was deleted by hackers, using the default generic sound card did work for a while, but currently after some updates and a try to pay mp4 files I managed to play MP4 fine but without sound. Somehow all the steps in troubleshooting sound in the Ubuntu documentation do not manage to restore my sound.

Here is the requested listing from the gnome terminal, with unlimted enabled, so you really got it all here. Great OS platform though only my sound card somehow isn't supported or so on 10.04 LTS. Hope you have suggestions.

gnome-volume-control, headphones and other diagnostics give me no sound, I use dual boot on this system and Windows 7 all sound is correct. I saw there was no sound card detected though I clearly have one and the driver for ALSA is missing:

OSS 4.2 (b 2003/201005280201)EXPIRED (C) 4Front Technologies 1996-2009

********************************************
* This OSS version has expired in Dec 2010 *

So the ALSA driver is not installed, but it seems to have been REPLACED by the OSS4.2 audio system...

I suggest reverting back to the ALSA audio system by first following the instructions under the title "Reverse back your changes" in the following document:

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install-oss4-in-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-for-better-sound-quality.html

After removing OSS4.2 using the previous link, execute step 1 (ALSA upgrade procedure) and step 2, then reboot and send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

You don't have a driver version. This is the problem. Do the following:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Please execute step 1 and step 2, then reboot and send us the full terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure mentioned above.
