If you run:

alsamixer

are all levels cranked and umuted.

I have followed the troubleshooting steps from the ubuntu community. That has resolved the problem regarding the sound but the update manger is not working now. Hence could not play the saved music on the system. Even the USB ports are not working!! It does not detect any device.....
   Lost totally!!!
