you should remove the Intrepid CD as a repo in software centre.

Can you then give the output of:

cd ~; wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh ; bash ./alsa-info.sh

Thanks

Try:

gksudo gedit /etc/modules

add this line:

snd-ymfpci

Save the new file and reboot, does it then work.

It works in XP because the makers of the card have lovingly crafted the drivers. You have the drivers installed and configured properly. This is missing in Ubuntu so you get no sound. What XP does or doesn't do is of no significance at all as it is a different OS with completely different support.

I can only suggest you log a bug and some drivers may be suggested or made. Alternatively you could sell or exchange the device for something which will work out of the box with the default driver set.
