All gone wrong at once?
This would be better suited to the bugs section, I know, however as I will explain a little later on in this text, I can't report it as a bug, as Apport isn't working.
Yesterday, I reported a bug in X, wherein the screen would randomly default to a single flashing window, and that the only remedy for this was to restart X.
Today, things went from bad to worse, and here's why:
Today, as I normally do (and as I say in my bug report yesterday), I was starting up Chromium, when all of a sudden X closed itself, and brought Compiz and GNOME down as well (or something brought all 3 down, not too sure on the details...), giving me a status terminal on TTY7 (my usual desktop TTY.)
So, in response, I went into TTY1, to restart X. When I logged in the first time, I got a buffer underrun error.
This was resolved when I logged in the second time.
So, I typed in, "startx", to start the X server.
I got a cursor on a black screen; no background, no launcher panel, no status panel at the top of the screen, no nothing. I went back into TTY1 to start GNOME and/or compiz.
GNOME gave me a segmentation fault, and compiz said something about being unable to connect (didn't quite catch the whole error message.)
So, I rebooted.
Now, I have X running reliably, and can open windows and applications somewhat stably.
However, still no launcher or status panel.
As a result, everything has to be run from the terminal, which I have to open from the desktop (fortunately, I installed whatever package it is that allows you to right click in a folder and, "Open in Terminal.").
So, I launched the terminal, and opened Apport, in the hopes of reporting the bug. I clicked on X, clicked on Other, and got a segmentation fault.
I did this a number of times, in the hopes that it was a random fluke, and the latest time, the window never even opened, just gave me a seg fault directly, thus rendering it, and for the most part, Ubuntu itself, somewhat useless.
HELP?!?!?
