All gone wrong at once?

Asked by Connor Wood

This would be better suited to the bugs section, I know, however as I will explain a little later on in this text, I can't report it as a bug, as Apport isn't working.

Yesterday, I reported a bug in X, wherein the screen would randomly default to a single flashing window, and that the only remedy for this was to restart X.

Today, things went from bad to worse, and here's why:

Today, as I normally do (and as I say in my bug report yesterday), I was starting up Chromium, when all of a sudden X closed itself, and brought Compiz and GNOME down as well (or something brought all 3 down, not too sure on the details...), giving me a status terminal on TTY7 (my usual desktop TTY.)

So, in response, I went into TTY1, to restart X. When I logged in the first time, I got a buffer underrun error.

This was resolved when I logged in the second time.

So, I typed in, "startx", to start the X server.

I got a cursor on a black screen; no background, no launcher panel, no status panel at the top of the screen, no nothing. I went back into TTY1 to start GNOME and/or compiz.

GNOME gave me a segmentation fault, and compiz said something about being unable to connect (didn't quite catch the whole error message.)

So, I rebooted.

Now, I have X running reliably, and can open windows and applications somewhat stably.

However, still no launcher or status panel.

As a result, everything has to be run from the terminal, which I have to open from the desktop (fortunately, I installed whatever package it is that allows you to right click in a folder and, "Open in Terminal.").

So, I launched the terminal, and opened Apport, in the hopes of reporting the bug. I clicked on X, clicked on Other, and got a segmentation fault.

I did this a number of times, in the hopes that it was a random fluke, and the latest time, the window never even opened, just gave me a seg fault directly, thus rendering it, and for the most part, Ubuntu itself, somewhat useless.

HELP?!?!?

One other thing, I forgot to mention, I switched recently from Firefox to Chromium, because FF was randomly crashing on me on startup, which appeared to be a seg fault, according to the bug report.
Recently, Chromium is doing something similar. With Chromium being somewhat more stable than FF, only the individual tabs crash, and when that doesn't happen, flash crashes instead. As I was typing this, it crashed about 8 times.

Right now I am fearing my disk is dying... :S

UPDATE: Okay, so I ran Memtest86+ just now, and it gave me + 18,000 errors. Through trial and error, I managed to determine which DIMM this was, and removed the offending module. The other one is not giving me any errors on Memtest86+, and the seg faults seem to have disappeared, but I don't want to commit to that just yet.

But, still NO launcher, and NO status panel :/

I am turning over in my mind whether to upgrade to 11.10 and seeing if that fixes the problem, but then there is the issue of if that causes more issues...
