Installation of Google Chrome with GDebi

Hello Com!!
I downloaded the package Google Chrome for 64 bits, for my tablet with Ubuntu 15.04. I read at the Firefox site that GDebi is an "simple" installing tool. However I have hardly knowledge and experience with using Unix-cmmds.
Installing GDebi could be done with sudo apt-get install gdebi ?
I had no success with it.
Will you help me with a complete procedure for installing GDebi?
Is it possible to install other packages, such as E-Book Viewer / Calibre, with GDebi?

Ubuntu 15.04 is not supported by the Ubuntu community in any way. It's support is EOL (end of life).

15.04 reached End of Life February 4, 2016

You might need a new install. Ubuntu 14.04. LTS (Long Term support) will not reach End Of Life until April 2019. 16.04 LTS will go on until April 2021.

I am unpleasant surprised!! I bought the Aquaris M10 tablet, first edition a month ago!!
With Ubuntu 15.04 (OTA-12)
Will yoy explain me why I have this problem now??
So far it is updated a few times.

Yes, the command to install gdebi on a supported Ubuntu release is

sudo apt-get install gedbi

but your version (if it is 15.04) is not supported any more. The software repositories have been removed.

What is the output of the commands (to be executed in a terminal window)

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo apt-get update
apt-cache policy gdebi

I hope that you have enough information, if not let me know please.
It's clear that I have a not supported OS. What can I do !!!
You know that the M10 tablet can be used as a "touch screen device" or as a pc with keyboard and mouse?
I am afraid that 14.04 or 16.04 are not capable to give both user-interfaces?? Is that right?

Do you have a working network connection?

What is the output of

ping -c 1 8.8.8.8
ping -c 1 us.archive.ubuntu.com

do you get 0% packet loss or 100% packet loss?

These error messages are unexpected. It is true that the files like http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/vivid-security/restricted/binary-armhf/Packages do not exist, but the package management system should automatically fail over to http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/vivid-security/restricted/binary-armhf/Packages.gz or http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/vivid-security/restricted/binary-armhf/Packages.bz2 which both do exist.

What is the full output of the following commands:

uname -a
wget -O - http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/vivid-security/restricted/binary-armhf/Packages

Are you aware that you have to switch to read-write mode before you try doing installations with apt-get and/or gdebi?

Please, write me how I can do this "switching to read-write mode"!
(In the meantime I will see how by myself.)

I don't own an Ubuntu tablet or phone myself, so I cannot really give details about the ways to operate it. Please search yourself.

it looks a good moment to evaluate what happened till now!

At 15/16-08 you and two of your colleagues wrote that my
 "BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition — the first commercial Ubuntu Tablet to come to market. It delivers the power to switch to an Ubuntu PC when connected with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard",
has an EOL operating system: 15.04 !!!
( EOL-date Feb. 4 2016 ! I received this device early July 2016 !)

I cannot imagine that I am the only one who has this problem! Can you give me an address where I can put my questions about this?
Some of your colleagues suggested that I might need a new install of 14.04 or 16.04; but is it then possible to switch from "touch to pc" ??
Because  there are (of course!) more buyers of this device: which version of Ubuntu is installed?
Please inform me about that!!
And when I am obliged to hand in functionality, I have to accept ??!!
(The question about installing another browser can be putted in the cooler for some time!)

Manfred, you asked me to do some tests and pass on outputs of several commands.
On 27-08 I asked you "what is your goal / target" with all these cmnds?
Till now I have no answer.

30-08 you wrote me that I have a "locking / read-write" problem with a file.
You gave me some links where I could find a good starting point to solve this problem.
But as I wrote at the beginning of our contact: I have not enough knowledge and experience with unix-cmnds!
Unfortunately, I don't know what I am doing!! I am a non-developer; some remarks I read via the links are not hopeful for me!

May be, I do better asking a complete other question to Ask Ubuntu:
Which Ubuntu-version is necessary to use my tablet as described above!
Can I install it with my limited knowledge of Unix
and if not: I don't believe that I did a bad buy !!

Let me try giving some answers based on my knowledge (which is incomplete, because I do not have own experience with Ubuntu touch):

For the Ubuntu desktop versions there is a clear release policy, and currently only 12.04, 14.04 and 16.04 are supported releases. Updating and installing packages is done with the package management programs.

Ubuntu phone/tablet is different.
As far a I know the current version of the operating system for Ubuntu touch is based on Ubuntu 15.04 and is definitely supported further (ota 13 update target date is in two weeks' time).

At the beginning of this conversation we were not aware that you are talking about a tablet with Ubuntu touch, leading to the question about the release you are running, and the answer that it would be no more supported.

Updating Ubuntu touch is different. In cycles of about 6 weeks a complete set of updates is published, providing not complete packages but only the difference to the previous one. This requires that the software is unchanged.

As far as I know it is discouraged to try installing additional packages on Ubuntu touch, because you probably will prevent further ota updates from correctly working.

And to the background of my questions on Aug 27 and 30: at that time I was wondering why the package management system ends up with errors, and tried to find out the root cause (network problem, or error in programs, or error in configuration). Now I know that the background is that you have Ubuntu touch, and the package management programs for the Ubuntu desktop variant are not supposed to work the same way on a tablet.

Summary:
You should use the tablet as it is, and use the pre-installed apps.
If you really want to install additional packages, you are free to do so, but this would leave the supported path and you do that on your own risk, and you have to accept the consequences if something fails afterwards.

I am afraid that this text:
"With Ubuntu’s convergence features, you can now get a full PC experience on your Ubuntu Tablet. Simply connect a mouse and keyboard wirelessly to your tablet when it’s time to get something done, whether it’s serious work or serious gaming. ...................."
Excuse for bothering you with my installation problem; I didn’t check up the meaning of "convergence", full PC ...." and so on previously!!
I will search the Ubuntu-site for more information about the development-goals for the "convergence features".
If possible: give me a hint, please.
I wait for the next update of 15.04 (OTA 13)

Thank you for your advices concerning additional packages. I will look for an alternative for f.e. Calibre / E-Book Viewer, may there is an app which meets my wishes.
