Can't write to backup drive

Asked by David Rhoderick

I want to use BackInTime because it will allow two backups, which I need for backing up my server and a file archive using the same machine. I have a backup drive attached with the ext4 filesystem (I couldn't find any information for what is ideal) and I am backing up an lvm partition.

I enter all the information, keeping mostly the defaults but try to back up the whole hard drive to the external hard drive. When I click OK, it says "Can't write to [hard drive]: Are you sure you have permissions?" I even changed all permissions on that partition using chmod to 777 recursively and that didn't work.

All I'm trying to do is create a simple, local backup. Is this possible? I don't mind running it as root but I need to know what steps I need to take so I can set this up?

I reformatted my drive to NTSF and that resolved the issue.

You should rather stay with EXT filesystem. Just make sure your user has owns the folder on that drive and has write permissions and you should be fine.
