Please reopen your question you have put it in a solved state...

A) Is your webcam working installing and using the cheese package...?

B) please send us the result of this terminal command:

lsusb

C) please send us the web link of the page you are trying to use to webchat

I think you need to break down your question into two parts.

One: Is your webcam working at all? As marcobra suggested, if you install the "cheese" package this should let you see that your webcam is working on your local computer. This is the first step in testing your system. If you cannot see yourself in this program, then something may be wrong with your webcam setup. If it is working, got to step Two below.

If this is the case, as marcobra suggested, press "CTRL+ALT+T", to open a terminal window then type in the command "lsusb" in lower case, then press enter. Cut and paste the result here. This will let us know exactly what chip the camera is using, and will help us know how to help you further.

Two: To talk to your friends, you can install either the "pidgin" or "empathy" programs.
