No usable unity desktop after upgrade from 10.04LTS to 12.04LTS

After upgrading to ubuntu12.04 the unity desktop is not working properly. I tried to repair it and simply restart it from the terminal. After typing sudo unity, I received a number of warnings and the following error

Setting Update “run_key”
compiz (core) – Warn: unhandled ConfigureNotify on 0x1a000a1!
Compiz (core) – Warn: tis should never happen. You should probably file a bug about this

And so i am.

10.04 to 12.04 is a large change. Personally I would try a clean install
