canon ip1980 driver problem

I have a problem installing the linux driver for my Canon iP1980 on Karmic Koala 9.10
I have downloaded the iP1900_debian_printer.tar linux driver from the Canon.com website and extracted the 2 files: cnijfilter-common_3.00-1_i386.deb and cnijfilter-ip1900series_ 3.00-1_i386.deb.
The cnijfilter-common file installs, but posts an error message saying 'Failed to completely install all dependencies' – and suggests I run 'sudo apt-get install -f' in terminal to resolve the problem. When I do this 'cnijfilter-common' is removed.

Alternatively it suggests that I can use 'gksudo synaptic' to resolve the problem. This route identifies the 'cnijfilter-common' problem as a 'broken package'.

When I try to install the cnijfilter-ip1900 series file I get an error message in red saying 'Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: cnijfilter-common(>=3.00)' (broken cache).

I have re-downloaded the iP1900 debian printer.tar file twice more from the canon website but still have the same problem. Advice needed please.

Each package should be automatically integrity checked, so it is unlikely that it is a bad download.

Try removing the package, and starting again -- install first cnijfilter-common, but do not force (-f) the package -- you are being warned that some components that are stated as needed for that package are missing. It should tell you what they are -- can you post that here?

try

sudo apt-get remove cnijfilter-common cnijfilter-ip1900

if this fails

sudo dpkg --purge cnijfilter-ip1900
sudo dpkg --purge cnijfilter-common

Also, either the md5sum, or better a direct link to what you downloaded would be helpful -- then we can look in the packages and see what the requirements are -- this is simply a text file inside the archive.

Dear mycae,

Thank you for your reply. Apologies for my tardy response, but I am currently located in rural Indonesia (North Sulawesi) and can only hook-up to the internet via mobile broadband through my Nokia N73. The connection is intermittent and very, very slow, and we also have daily power-cuts.... so please expect delays in my responses.

Below is the full text of the 'Failed to install' message which is posted after I have tried to install cnijfilter-common:

With regard to the apparent non-installation of libcupsys2 on my system...my Synaptic Package Manager shows that I already have libcups2 installed on my system. I believe that libcups2 is an updated form of libcupsys2 and should function OK as an updated replacement...but maybe not.
I am not that experienced with the ins-and-outs of Ubuntu and am unfamiliar with your reference to 'md5sum' … so please advise on how I might use this function.

PS. I am not too sure which text file in the archive you are referring to, but the one below is a 'LICENCE' text file in the tar archive...hope this helps.

SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT

This is a legal agreement (the "Agreement") between you and Canon Inc. OK, so it turns out those packages are poorly written -- the text file I was after is inside the .deb file -- you can see this by opening the deb file with file-roller, then opening the control.tar.gz file inside the deb file (deb files are just archives).

They (canon's business partner) have specified something that is a "virtual" package as a dependency, without providing any fallback hints. This is a no-no (http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/12/msg00391.html). libcupsys2 is actually provided by libcups2

So, the short is do this (the $ is not part of the command):

The changes almost worked. When I connected my printer its icon and name were correctly detected in System/Admin/Printing.. with no error messages. I also got a black rectangle appear on the top right of the desktop saying, in white text, that my printer was installed and ready to use. When I tried to print a test page it showed 'processing' , and a 'printing' icon appeared permanently in the top menu bar ...but got no further... the orange light on the printer started blinking, but nothing was printed. The orange:green blink rate is 5:1, which I believe has a troubleshooting significance to Canon maintenance engineers. There are no details relating to orange blink rates in the basic user manual I got with the new printer so I can't get any further on that one.

I assume that the green light is a separator, so your situation would be

Dear mycae,

The orange blinking codes were very useful. I cleaned up the black and colour ink cartridge contacts using 95% ethanol and cotton buds and refitted them...orange blink rate then dropped from 5 to 4...indicating empty cartridges (-article 2). Refilled both cartridges ( -bulk ink is relatively cheap in Manado), refitted them and... bingo... printer worked perfectly.
It seems that both cartridges need to have ink for the printer to function. I first only refilled the black cartridge...and still had the 4 orange blinks...this was resolved when I then refilled the colour cartridge. It would have saved us both some time if Canon had included these issues in their user manual (- including guidance for Linux users)...but then it seems that printer manufacturers make it deliberately difficult for Joe Public to service their machines...presumably to promote cartridge sales, maintenance charges and new printers... thank goodness we have the internet.

Unfortunately I am now left with another problem. I have a red, 'no entry' icon permanently in my top menu bar. When I cover this with the cursor it displays the following message in a yellow background:

“An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Error: BrokenCount >0' This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies”

When I right click this warning and run Package Manager I get the message:
“You have 2 broken packages on your system! Use the 'Broken Filter' to locate them”

When I open 'Broken Dependencies' the two cnijfilter packages (- common and ip1900series) are listed, annotated with small red squares under column heading 'S'.

Despite all these error messages the printer still works perfectly!

When I am prompted to 'Upgrade' I receive an error message saying:
“Software index is broken – impossible to install or remove software. Please use Synaptic Package Manager Synaptic or run sudo apt-get install -f to fix this issue first”

When I connect to upgrade I am informed that 2 files will be removed before new files are downloaded (-the two files removed are the cnijfilter files)..and I am back to square one again with a non-functioning printer (- with a 'missing cups filter' message in a black rectangle in the top right of the desktop). If I then reload the 2 cnijfilter files, using your 'force-all' workaround my printer works perfectly again. But the red 'no-entry' sign reappears and I am back again with the above problem.

It would seem that I need some kind of fix to override the two, installed, 'broken' cniijfilter file error judgments, so that my printer will keep working and I will also be able to download upgrades normally.

OK.... We can try modifying the deb packages to alter their depends information -- this is not the normal way to do things, but should work.

First copy the packages to a safe spot, and keep one copy to work on, and the other as the backup in case something goes wrong.

Do this for each deb file, which as a placeholder i will call "PKG", to refer to "PKG".deb

1) Right click the deb file and select open with archive manager
2) Extract the contents of the archive (3 files, control.tar.gz, data.tar.gz and debian-binary) to a new folder, for arguments sake I will call it "PKG_EDIT", but call it what you like (for ease, without spaces or non-english chars).
3) navigate to that folder and then double click the control.tar.gz archive to open it in the archive manager, and then double click the file called control. This should open a file beginning with the contents

Package: cnijfilter-ip1900series
Version: 3.00-1

4) Go down to where it says "libcupsys2 (>=1.2.1)," and remove this bit (the bit inside the quotes). Ensure that there is a separating comma between the "libcairo2 (>= 1.0.2-2)" and "libfontconfig1 (>=2.3.0)"

Save this edited file & close the editor, then the control.tar.gz archive window. This should update the control.tar.gz archive with our modified version

5) right click the folder and select "compress" Set the filename to PKG, choosing ".ar" from the dropdown. Hit create.

6) right click the newly created archive and choose to open with archive manager -- you should see the control.tar.gz, data.tar.gz and debian-binary files much the same as the original, but now with our modification.

7) rename the modifed archive back to the original PKG.deb name (eg cnijfilter-ip1900series_3.00-1_i386.deb)

8) you should now be able to install the file without needing to force it, as it no longer lists cupsys as a dependency.

Dear mycae,

I have worked through your instructions but still have a problem.
I started first with the cnijfilter-common deb file.
Having completed the first 7 of your instructions I attempted to install the amended file. I received an error message in terminal:

dpkg-deb: file /home/pakguru3Documents/cnijfilter-common_3.00-1_i386.deb is not a debian binary archive ( try dpkg-split?)
dpkg: error processing /home/pakguru3Documents/cnijfilter-common_3.00-1_i386.deb( --install) :
subprocess dpkg-deb --control returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
/home/pakguru3Documents/cnijfilter-common_3.00-1_i386.deb

When I worked next through the changes on the cnijfilter-ip1900series file and tried to install it I ended up with an error message, in red, saying:

Error: Dependency not satisfiable: cnijfilter-common (>=3.00)

I then decided to retrace my steps. Nothing seemed amiss until I got to step 6. On opening the PKG.ar file to check my changes, it appears that an additional 'control' , backup file, has been created in the compress process. I am not familiar enough with file structures and syntax to know if this is a problem or not.
There are now 6 files in that package:

1.control 423 bytes, type = unknown.....now showing libcupsys2() instead of libcupsys2(>=1.2.1)
2.control.tar.gz, 787 bytes, type = Tar archive
3.control~ 431 bytes type = backup file........this is the unexpected?? creation.
4.data.tar.gz 60.7 KB type = Tar archive
5.debian binary 4 bytes type = unknown
6.md5sums 736 bytes type = unknown

I am unable to open the 'control~' file to see its contents. Even after I deleted this file and tried to install the PKG.ar file renamed as 'cnijfilter-common_3.00-1_i386.deb' without it I still received the same error read-out in terminal (-as mentioned above).
I even tried omitting the () brackets at the end of the libcusys2 text (-since they now seemed superfluous) but the terminal error read-out was still the same.

Further to above message...I have been through your instructions again...more carefully, and realise that I misread your "in quotes" for "in brackets" in instruction 4,,, so I only removed the bracket contents instead of the whole '(libcupsys2 (>=1.2.1),'.
I have now amended that 'control' file (- now without libcupsys2 (>=1.2.1), and tried to install again...but I get exactly the same outcome as before...same error message in terminal and a 'control~' file after I compress.

I have downloaded your two modified 'deb' files from the file-share site.

When I tried to install the cnijfilter-common package I received the same error notification in terminal that posted when I first tried to install the 'same' file from the Canon website.
When I tried to install the cnijfilter-ip1900series package the error message was the same as that with the un-modified Canon file, i.e. 'Broken dependencies'.
It would seem that the problem is more obscure.

I have been exploring an alternative route to installing the printer driver files.
When I originally downloaded the cnijfilter-common and cnijfilter-ip1900 series deb files I also downloaded the two corresponding 'rpm' files:
1.cnijfilter-common-3.00-1.i386.rpm
2.cnijfilter-ip1900series-3.00-1.i386.rpm

I converted these two 'rpm' files to 'deb' files using alien(8.78). They converted, respectively, as:

4.cnijfilter-ip1900series_3.00-2_i386.deb

( the 3.00-1's changed to 3.00-2's ??)

Both these converted files (3) and (4) installed fully, with no errors and are present in Synaptic Package Manager as 'installed' and both have green squares in the 'S' column. The printer is shown correctly in System/Admin/Printing...but will not print.
The printer, when connected and turned on, is shown in 'Printer State' as 'idle'.
When I click on 'Print Test Page' the printing icon appears in the top menu bar for two seconds and then disappears..and that's it...nothing prints and no jobs are listed in the print queue.
When I click on 'Print Self-Test Page' the 'Printer State' changes to 'Idle -printer is now online' ..no printing icon appears in the top menu bar and nothing prints and no jobs are listed in the print queue.

I then explored the 'troubleshooting' printing option relating to this situation. This eventually generated the following, rather lengthy, error message:

I apologise for deluging you with so much data but I figured that the more information you have on the problem the better!
The only point of any significance I can see in the above data is the repeated mention of 'dirty files' which sounds a bit worrying.

Alien is an unfortunate program. It gets you part of the way from an rpm->deb, but by no means all the way... IMHO it should never have been advertised as a converter, as it is usually assumed that the conversion process is 1:1, which it by no means is. I would in no way expect it to work.

So if, in the end, none of the above are working for you, then I would just stick with the X mark, which seemed to be the least inconvenient....

Finally, in the future, you might want to check (assuming you have the option) the printer compatability database (openprinting.org), before making any new printer purchases. I have only had bad experiences with canon -- their drivers (under windows too) are awful.

Dear mycae,

No power-cuts tonight (-probably because it's Xmas Eve and they want to keep the lights on in the churches) so have had some time to ferret around on the Ubuntu sites. Found this message from an Indian guy, 'arayilpdas' on June2nd, 2010 at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9439655 suggesting that a libcupsys2 file: libcupsys2_1.3.9-17ubuntu1_all.deb needs to be installed prior to installation of cnijfilter-common /ip1900series deb files.

I downloaded this file from http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/cups/ and installed it.
Then, fingers crossed, started installing the original Canon cnijfilter-common deb file...no problems...no error messages about missing libcupsys2. Then proceeded with the Canon cnijfilter-ip1900series deb file...again no problems.
Then added printer in System/Admin/Printing...printer configured perfectly. Test page printed OK, as did one of my OpenOffice text files...so it looks as if we are finally there!
I am keeping my fingers crossed that the printer will continue to function correctly...if not, I'll drop you a line again in the New Year!
Many thanks for your patience and assistance in helping to resolve my problem.
