Possible to delete old backups?

Asked by sparrowt

Apologies if this is a silly question or obvious.

I have started to use deja-dup to backup my documents from my laptop to a share on my desktop computer.
It seems that no data is ever deleted from the share, i.e. as the contents of my documents changes, the size of the backup on my desktop will continue to increase.
What i would like is for it to delete all backups older than 1 week or even 1 day. I don't really need past copies of things, i just want like a mirror incase my laptop dies!!

I hope this is clear, do ask if not!
It might be that this is the wrong program for my needs... if so please could you suggest another?

Thank you in advance :)

I'm not familiar with deja-dup but it seems you are in search for an incremental backup tool and the `rsync` command is a great tool. Refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/rsync#grsync for instructions on how to use the command.

I'm not sure what version of deja-dup you are using, but newer versions (>= 11) do support deleting old backups older than "some amount of time". It's a preference in the preference dialog near the bottom.

Ok yes i'm using version 10.2 because i installed it through the ubuntu repos. I finally figured out how to install a more recent version and that has add the feature as you said so that's fixed my issue.
Thank you so much for all your work on this Michael, it's great stuff!
God bless :)
